Dr. Zaiqing Nie is a Named Professor at Tsinghua University and Principal Researcher of AIR. He is also the Director of the Big Data Intelligence Lab at AIR, where he conducts research and leads projects related to AI and Big Data analytics. In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Nie is the founder and chief scientist of Pharmolix Inc., a global provider of foundation models for the biopharmaceutical industry. This indicates his expertise in applying AI and big data techniques to the field of biopharmaceutical research.

Dr. Nie obtained his doctoral degree from Arizona State University in 2004, under the guidance of Subbarao Kambhampati, a well-known expert in AI and previous president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Before pursuing his doctoral studies in the United States, Dr. Nie completed his undergraduate education at Tsinghua University, majoring in Computer Science and Technology.

In 2017, Dr. Nie joined Alibaba Group, a multinational conglomerate specializing in e-commerce, technology, and AI. He served as the head of Alibaba AI Lab in Beijing and the chief scientist of Tmall Genie, which is Alibaba's Chinese version of the popular voice assistant, Alexa. Additionally, he was a member of the AI Expert Panel under the Ministry of Education, contributing to the development and governance of AI technologies in China.
Prior to his tenure at Alibaba, Dr. Nie worked at Microsoft Research as a Principal Researcher. During his time there, he led the Big Data Mining group and made significant contributions to various projects. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the development of Microsoft Academic Search, a platform for academic research discovery. He also contributed to the creation of EntityCube, an entity search engine, and served as the technological head of LUIS (Language Understanding Intelligent Service), Microsoft's platform for natural language understanding.
